The Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was established on January 1, 2002, based on the decisions of the Faculty Council of the Medical School of the University of Pécs on November 21, 2001, and the Senate of the University of Pécs on December 13, 2001. The circumstances surrounding the establishment of the Institute clearly defined its primary responsibilities. As one of the fundamental pillars of pharmaceutical education, its mission is to provide education in pharmaceutical chemistry within the framework of both undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy programs.
The development of the Institute's permanent location could only begin in October 2003. From August 2002 to October 2003, the Institute was temporarily housed in two rooms of the University Pharmacy to handle its administrative tasks and other teaching-related responsibilities. The practical training for the pharmaceutical chemistry course began in September 2002 in one of the teaching laboratories of the Vocational School of Chemical Engineering.
The Vocational School of Chemical Engineering moved out of the Rókus Street building at the end of August 2003. The staff of the Institute occupied the ground-floor premises of the Rókus Street building as the Institute's permanent location in early November 2003. Since then, the Institute's research laboratories have been established, and research activities representing the Institute's scientific profile have commenced.
