Since the 2013/2014 academic year, the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry has traditionally organised a chemistry competition for third- and fourth-year pharmacy students at the University of Pécs, Faculty of Pharmacy. The competition is held exclusively in the spring semester.
ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to students enrolled in their sixth or eighth semester who are eligible to take their examinations and have successfully passed the comprehensive examinations in General and Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.
Registration: To enter the competition, send a registration email including your name and a chosen code name, using the following format:
To: gyogyszereszi.kemia@aok.pte.hu
Subject: “Carl Than” Chemistry Competition
Message: I would like to register for the announced chemistry competition. Name, chosen code name, year of study, EHA code.
Third- and fourth-year students compete in separate sections. The competition consists of two rounds.
In the first round, participants demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry in an approximately 90-minute test. Questions cover pharmaceutical analysis and pharmaceutical chemistry and include reasoning questions, single- and multiple-answer questions, calculations, and written responses. For third-year students, the test covers the material of the Pharmaceutical Chemistry II semester examination; for fourth-year students, it covers the material of the comprehensive examination.
In the second round, participants carry out a laboratory determination using either a classical pharmacopoeial volumetric method or an instrumental analytical method. Students perform the analytical work independently, from sampling through to calculating and reporting their results in the laboratory report. They must comply with the relevant Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines and rules throughout their work. Results are published for students under the participants’ chosen code names.
Required results: A score of at least 80% of the maximum in the theoretical round and an accuracy of 100±1% in the practical round.
Awards: Among third-year students who meet the above requirements, the top three are offered an excellent grade (5) for the Pharmaceutical Chemistry II semester examination, to be entered in their academic records. If fewer than three students meet the requirements, fewer awards will be granted. Students ranked below third place who meet the required results are exempt from the written minimum-requirement questions preceding the oral examinations. Fourth-year students who achieve the required 80% score are exempt from the written minimum-requirement questions of the comprehensive examination.
