To give context to the ‛BSc in Biotechnology’ degree course by discussing
· how the field of biotechnology has become a strategic research policy area at EU level;
· how it can contribute to meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals;
· the numerous practical applications and future potential of biotechnology, using case studies from the EU;
· the difficulties involved in funding biotechnology R&D&I in the EU;
· public perception of biotechnology, of modern biotechnology in particular, in the EU;
· the responsibilities of researchers.
